Report on the kick-off meeting of OPTILATER – Optimal long-term survival after cancer

On March 13/14, 2023, the national research consortium OPTILATER, funded by the Federal Ministry of Health, launched the kick-off meeting at the Teaching and Learning Center (LLZ) in Essen. For many of the consortium partners, it was the first time they had met in person, so the first item on the agenda was to get to know each other before working on the day’s agenda with full motivation. After the project, initiated by Prof. Uta Dirksen and Prof. Viktor Grünwald and coordinated by WTZ Essen, was first introduced by Prof. Uta Dirksen in an overview presentation, the first day focused on the detailed presentation of the individual work packages. The project managers were able to explain their respective tasks and the next steps, milestones and goals in order to create a common understanding of the challenges of the individual work packages. In the detailed discussions, the interfaces between the respective work packages were discussed in particular, thus laying the foundation for the workshops on day 2. The first day ended with a joint dinner, where the discussions could be continued in a different environment.

The second day of the kick-off meeting was characterized by the workshops, which mainly focused on the handling of patient data. To this end, the work packages met separately and in joint group workshops to define mutual interfaces and, in particular, to discuss the processing and transmission of patient-specific data. In each of the workshops, the voice of the patient representatives was heard above all. The results of the workshops were presented at the end of the day and discussed by the entire consortium. Many thanks to the numerous external consortium partners (e.g. members of the international Advisory Board, DKKR, LKR and patient representatives), whose helpful comments and advice promoted a lively discussion and thus reflected the strength of the consortium right from the start of the project.
